"Bear Medicine" tells the story of a young half-blood Lakota, Rachel Hennessy, who is drawn by personal heartbreak from a comfortable life in white suburbia to the rigors of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where her grandfather, Bill Whitefeather, is a shaman. There, Bill reveals that Rachel is destined to become the most powerful of all Lakota healers, a bear medicine woman. Weak and broken by the recent tragedies in her life, Rachel is sure she has nothing to give, yet she finds herself walking a new spiritual path. In so doing, she develops power she never suspected she had and the wisdom to help heal her native people. Even more important, Rachel finally confronts the evil that has haunted her family for three generations in the person of Raven Elkhorn, a wicasa winyan - evil witch doctor. In the end, Rachel, renamed Jade by the Lakota, learns that healers must first heal themselves, that evil is the result of wounds left to fester, and that the truest medicine is compassion.

Since I'd never heard of this author before, I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this book. But once I started reading, I had a hard time putting it down! The main character, Rachel, has been through a terrible tragedy and is sinking into a deep depression. It was so well described that I could feel myself sinking with her. Unable to deal with the trauma she's suffered and its results, she grasps at the only straw she finds available to herself - an invitation from her Lakota grandfather. The rest of the book follows her through her grief to the other side of the darkness, where she learns the truth about what happened and how to accept it and integrate her tragic loss into her life and move on. She learns to live beyond her loss and pain. A great book for anyone interested in Native American ways, shamanism, or trying to deal with their own losses.Product details

Bear Medicine eBook Lee Zamloch Reviews
I was impressed and started to enjoy the story until I got about 3 chapters into it and found that the author copied almost word for word from Lame Deer Seeker of Visions, Fools Crow's book and Black Elk's book. Its a good thing I could borrow it for free because I would not buy a book that takes the words of my ancestors and claims them as their own.
Bear Medicine is a story of personal transformation that offers a new perspective on the value and importance our country's native American heritage. Steeped in Lakota traditions and rituals, it traces the spiritual journey of a woman who goes back to her roots and discovers the missing pieces in her life that allow her to become much more than she ever imagined. It's a great story for anyone who wants to understand what spiritual awakening is really about. PS Disregard Customers review as he repeatedly attacks books and products on the site. I seriously doubt his honesty.
This book was a delightful find for me. I am a fan of the supernatural genre, and this has hints of that, as well as a terrific, fast-moving plot that manages to educate the reader about native american culture as a plus. The book is well-written and edited well to boot. Would recommend to fans of the Native-American and Paranormal genres.
